Recovery from Addiction

My approach to addiction is grounded in both scientific research, clinical best practices and personal experience. It emphasizes the interplay between biology, psychology, and social factors in the development and treatment of addiction.

Similar to my experience with ADHD and anxiety, I am in long-term recovery from a variety of addictions. Again this doesn’t mean I’m the right person to help you, what it does mean is that I have a unique perspective, and am an example of what can work for someone who wishes to recover from the torment of addiction.

Understanding Addiction

Neurobiological Basis

Addiction is a brain and behaviour disorder characterized by the compulsive pursuit of rewarding stimuli to deal with pain and discomfort despite the adverse consequences of the behaviour. This disorder affects the brain’s reward system, making it hard for someone to feel pleasure and make good choices.

Psychological and Social Components

Addiction is not just a biological issue but also deeply intertwined with psychological and social factors. Emotional pain, trauma, and environmental stressors play significant roles in the development and maintenance of addictive behaviours.

Integrated Treatment Approach

I advocate for an integrated approach to addiction treatment. Treatment can involve a combination of medication, psychotherapy, physical health changes and social support. This holistic method addresses the multifaceted nature of addiction, aiming to treat the whole person rather than just the symptoms.

Addressing Co-Occurring Disorders

Many individuals with addiction also suffer from co-occurring mental health disorders like depression, anxiety, ADHD, or PTSD. Effective treatment requires addressing these conditions simultaneously to improve overall outcomes.

Emphasis on Personal Responsibility

I believe in empowering clients to take an active role in their recovery. This involves fostering a sense of accountability and personal responsibility, encouraging individuals to engage in their treatment plans and make positive lifestyle changes.

Ongoing Care and Relapse Prevention

Addiction is a chronic condition requiring long-term management. Developing a way of life that promotes recovery with a comprehensive relapse prevention plan are crucial for maintaining sobriety and preventing relapse.

Tailored Strategies

There is no one-size-fits-all solution to treating addiction. I value the creativity of clients and support them to develop a personalized process to treat and recover from their addiction. This ultimately enables people to live a full and meaningful life.
